Monitoring volunteer and first aid training

Volunteer Monitors hike across the desert with MDLT staff to record changes in the landscape and land use. This volunteer team requires extra training, a high level of physical and mental fitness, and the ability to hike across difficult terrain. MDLT Volunteer Monitors help with: Formal monthly monitoring sessions every second Wednesday of the month (weather permitting). Biweekly Local Patrols: a more casual way of observing the state of MDLT's Morongo Basin preserves mostly from a vehicle. Volunteers also help monitor preserves during their own casual hikes via an online form. We will be hosting multiple one-day training sessions throughout 2024. A training session will include a free first aid/CPR certification, wilderness first aid training, a topographic map workshop, monitoring software, protocol, and naturalist training. New volunteers are welcome!

National Public Lands Day #Storiesandstewardship2024 at Giant Rock

Spend your morning at Giant Rock, Saturday, September 28th for National Public Lands Day, or join us on Friday, September 27th at 3PM for Elephant snot (graffiti removal chemical) for optional preparation, application, and camping overnight. We will meet on the South side of the rock on the concrete pad (Formerly Van Tassel's family cafe). Please park close to the ridge and well south of the pad to keep room for our equipment and cleanup vehicles. Bring plenty of drinking water! Our water is not potable and used for pressure washing. Stay for a complimentary lunch following the work.

Please RSVP here for a free ticket so we have a head count.
